Welcome to Islam — the path of peace, mercy, and purpose. You have embarked on a beautiful journey. Take it at your own pace; this community is here for you.
“Islam wipes away what came before it.”
— Sahih Muslim
Learn step by step. You do not need to learn everything at once. Allah accepts every sincere effort you make.
The first step into Islam is the Shahada — the testimony of faith.
Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah
I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.
This means you believe in one God (Allah) and accept Muhammad (peace be upon him) as His final Prophet and Messenger. While witnesses are recommended when taking the shahada, Allah knows the sincerity of your heart.
These five acts form the foundation of a Muslim's life.
Testifying that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad (peace be upon him) is His Messenger. This is the gateway to Islam.
Five daily prayers: Fajr (dawn), Dhuhr (midday), Asr (afternoon), Maghrib (sunset), and Isha (night).
An obligatory annual charity of 2.5% of your savings. It purifies wealth and promotes social equality.
Abstaining from food and drink from dawn to sunset during the month of Ramadan. It cultivates taqwa (God-consciousness) and self-discipline.
A once-in-a-lifetime pilgrimage to Makkah — if you are physically and financially able.
Every Muslim believes in these six fundamental truths.
Prayer (salah) is a direct connection with Allah. Learn at your own pace — even imperfect prayer is accepted when made with sincerity.
Make your intention. Wash both hands three times. Rinse your mouth three times. Rinse your nose three times. Wash your face three times. Wash your arms up to the elbows three times. Wipe your head. Wipe your ears. Wash both feet up to the ankles three times.
Stand facing the direction of the Kaaba in Makkah.
Make the intention in your heart for the specific prayer — which prayer and how many rak'ahs.
Raise your hands to your ears and say 'Allahu Akbar' (Allah is the Greatest) to begin the prayer.
Reciting Al-Fatiha in every rak'ah is obligatory. It is the opening chapter of the Quran.
After Al-Fatiha, recite any short surah. Surah Al-Ikhlas is a good one to start with.
Say 'Allahu Akbar' and bow. Say three times: 'Subhana Rabbiyal Adheem' (Glory to my Lord, the Magnificent).
Stand up saying 'Sami'Allahu liman hamidah' (Allah hears whoever praises Him), then say 'Rabbana wa lakal hamd' (Our Lord, to You belongs all praise).
Say 'Allahu Akbar' and prostrate. Say three times: 'Subhana Rabbiyal A'la' (Glory to my Lord, the Most High).
Say 'Allahu Akbar' and sit upright. You may say: 'Rabbighfirli, Rabbighfirli' (My Lord, forgive me).
Prostrate again and say 'Subhana Rabbiyal A'la' three times. This completes one rak'ah.
After two rak'ahs, sit and recite 'At-tahiyyatu lillahi...' (All greetings, prayers, and good things are for Allah).
In the final sitting, after Tashahhud, recite: 'Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad...' (O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad).
Turn your head to the right and then to the left, saying: 'Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah' (Peace and mercy of Allah be upon you). The prayer is complete.
You do not need to do everything at once. Take it one step at a time.
